Supplements. Are they the answer?

What’s the deal with supplements?

In my nutrition world, food is the best thing you can do for yourself. Getting clean food sources, eliminating poor quality foods, getting rid of harmful oils, high empty carb sources and more are the WAYS to fix yourself. You need to target what you choose to eat based on your personal imbalances (I can always help with that as an NTP). But then comes the question I get most from people, and from those with children struggling with repetitive fevers and more… what about all the supplements I can add to fix this???

Supplements are what they sound like – a supplement to your habits and already great nutrition.

If you don’t have great habits, have poor nutrition, supplements will do very little for you if nothing at all.

The point of them is to give your body an extra boost, or extra support, with specific issues that continue while eating, or after following, a great nutrition regimen meant JUST FOR YOU!

There is no one size fits all with supplements. It isn’t as easy as it seems with drugs handed out in a medical office. I am often approached in that way by folks because that is what they have been taught to do. Grab the pill, and it will all go away. Supplements don’t work that way – and I hate to break it to everyone neither does traditional medicine and medications.

Without eliminating your problem foods, and your problem habits, you are just wasting money on supplements. If you leave the root cause there, you don’t remove triggers and problems in your nutrition and lifestyle, there is nothing that will change.

What supplements do you need?

There isn’t just a set rule of thumb here. Your particular situation requires a particular way of eating, and then maybe if you need a supplement it is targeted at supporting that way of eating. And in addition, it might only be temporary with a supplement. I often find that I will recommend more starting out because it is highly supportive of the changes being made as we transition to a healthier nutrition pattern. As time goes on and we have more established patterns, my recommendations will change, or be eliminated. This is because you are supporting yourself more with nutrition and lifestyle changes.

What are things that I always recommend?

I generally recommend a nutraceutical multivitamin BUT there are a lot of variety and some are really targeted at your need, so I choose what is targeted to you. I also highly recommend the use of pre-probiotics HOWEVER this benefit is HIGHLY personal because each product has different strands and some of us need one particular type more than others. Quality is of utmost importance with all these products as well. Most people need some type of omega support – aka fish oil. But again – there are many products, all not created equal. Your particular dose, needs and absorption are highly important in deciding what to take.

Beyond this – there are so many more supportive supplements out there however, it is all based on your personal needs.

Where to go from here?

If you like the idea of getting in foods that fix problems you have, and finding the right support (possibly) with supplements, it is important to find a practitioner (an NTP like myself) to guide you in your process. You will get the fastest, best results this way. Believe me – I was a DIY myself and I spent TOO MANY years of my life searching and searching and it was like a needle in a haystack without the practitioner side of things.
